• “[Herbert] had also taken peyote and read Jung. In 1960, a sailing buddy introduced him to the Zen thinker Alan Watts, who was living on a houseboat in Sausalito. Long conversations with Watts, the main conduit by which Zen was permeating the west-coast counterculture, helped turn Herbert’s pacy adventure story into an exploration of temporality, the limits of personal identity and the mind’s relationship to the body.” Hari Kunzru on Frank Herbert and Dune, 50 years on. The art of Jean Boullet, 1921–1970

A few drawings and paintings by Jean Boullet, a prolific French illustrator who was also a writer—passionate about “sexology, conjuring, magic, demonology, and mythology”, says Wikipédia—and a film critic. His illustrations range from books by Raymond Radiguet, Boris Vian and Edgar Allan Poe to unabashed homoerotic collections of his own, one of which, Tapis volant (1945), has an introduction by Jean Cocteau. Boullet’s figures are very Cocteau-like, especially those depicting the sailors which Cocteau also liked to draw and fantasise about. The Au Bonheur du Jour gallery has many pages of Boullet’s drawings and publications, while Bibliothèque Gay has several posts showing complete sets of drawings from some of his books. Many of the artist’s drawings circulating without credit on the web seem to originate there. Don’t miss Metamorphoses (1950).

Elie Grekoff’s Tirésias

Elie Grekoff (1914–1985) is the illustrator, a Russian-born French artist. Tirésias (1954) is a short work of homoerotica originally published anonymously in an edition of 150. The Grekoff website describes the volume (via Babel Fish) thusly:

One of the most beautiful text of the homosexual literature, a work which circulated under the coat, and which was condemned by the courts in 1964 and which make also this work an extremely rare publication. Publication of 92 pages.

The author, Marcel Jouhandeau (1888–1979), apparently spent much of his life oscillating between licentiousness and guilt thanks to his Catholicism but nevertheless managed to produce an acclaimed piece of gay fiction. Us Anglophones have to take the acclaim on faith, however, since the story doesn’t yet appear to have been translated into English. Given the increasing interest in gay fiction past and present this is a surprising oversight but we can still appreciate Grekoff’s illustrations, a rather fine series of fifteen wood engravings. There was also an additional run of fifteen copies of the book containing five “refusées” prints.

Grekoff illustrated a variety of novels and poetry in different styles. His work for Tirésias is reminiscent of Jean Cocteau’s in its outline figures and especially the stars for nipples, the star being a recurrent Cocteau motif. Jouhandeau’s wife, Élisabeth Toulemont, was a friend of Cocteau’s so this may have been deliberate although it’s hard to tell either way given the scarcity of information.

The pornographic imagination is deeply intertwined with the pain and horror of life. Some of that comes from our basic biological reality, which is unpleasant enough, and much of it comes from our social structures. Biological life has been completely degraded and continues to become more and more degraded in novel and more horrific ways, so it is inevitable that our horrible social structures – our schools, prisons, families, slaughterhouses and farms – become sites for the pornographic imagination.

• Bibliothèque Gay looks at a series of erotic engravings made by Leonor Fini for La Galère (1947) by Jean Genet. The author reciprocated with Mademoiselle: A Letter to Leonor Fini. At the hetero end of the erotic spectrum, Tate Liverpool will be showing a series of drawings by René Magritte produced for a proposed edition of Madame Eduarda by Georges Bataille. René Magritte: The Pleasure Principle opens next month.

George Clinton will be appearing with Nona Hendryx at the British Library on 18th June, to talk about “all things galactic”. In addition there’s a screening of John Akomfrah’s The Last Angel of History, a documentary about Afrofuturism and black science fiction. See an introduction to that here.
