I have seen those Whistler etchings and the naval and architectural detail, even on faraway objects, is breathtaking. I was wondering if he used some optical aid (camera lucida or photographs).
One of the comments on that page says he drew direct on the etching plate in situ. No mention of how they know this but from the views I’d guess it was the case. I imagine he would have sketched everything in outline then filled in the details later.
