Binding by James Brockman for The Special Bindings of Gwasg Gregynog (2004).
Two examples from a stunning collection of contemporary bookbindings at the Guild of Book Workers’ website. These are the more traditional leather bindings but some of the others play with the form of the book in a variety of inventive ways. Thanks to Thom for the tip!
Binding by Monique Lallier for La Premiere École d’Arts Graphiques en Amerique (2006).

These bindings reminded me of a book I have at home that used to belong to my mother. It’s a history of music, a large hard covered tome, bound in wood and leather – (the front and back boards are wood). I’ve never seen another book like it.
The first one is truly gorgeous.
