A Swedish artist whose fairytale illustrations were an influence upon later book illustrators from Arthur Rackham to Brian Froud. More pictures here and yet more at Art Passions.

  1. What a delightful body of work this amazing artist has left us. I had never seen his work until I looked for Creative Commons images of Trolls for an article I proposed to write. My favourite artist from the Golden Age of book illustration (roughly 1880 – 1930) has always been Arthur Rackham. I must agree with the writer of an article on Wikipedia that had Bauer been born into an English-speaking environment he would have had as large a following as Rackham. Bauer’s death at age 36 together with his wife and son is a tragedy for art lovers and those who appreciate the work of a gentle – if often depressed – spirit. Such a loss – but I’m grateful to have discovered him at all.
