The Great Old Ones

from The Haunter of the Dark and Other Grotesque Visions

THIS PICTURE SERIES was already in progress for The Haunter of the Dark when Alan Moore suggested a collaboration in which he would write grimoire-style texts for each of the gods in the Lovecraft pantheon, plus one for "Abdul Alhazred", aka HP Lovecraft himself. Alan had just begun writing Promethea at this time, and was much concerned with the Kabbalah, so he structured the series by relating each god to a different sphere of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, rather like the Qliphoth of the Left-Hand Path.

The pictures here are taken from a series of prints which had titles added to the foot of each image. Those in the book are named solely by the accompanying texts. In Spaces Between is an introductory piece. The series that appeared in the 2006 reprint of the book included an extra picture and text devoted to Kadath which doesn't appear on this page.
